Facial filler treatments, also known as soft tissue volumization, is an injectable procedure designed to add lift, volume and contour to the face, as well as fill fine lines and wrinkles. We do this using dermal fillers made of hyaluronic acid (HA). HA is a naturally occurring substance in our bodies that helps our skin and tissues hold in water and moisture. The consistency of HA fillers is a gel like substance. These properties are what enable HA fillers to provide lift, contour and restore volume, as well as fill in fine lines and wrinkles. HA is an FDA approved facial filler.
A full facial assessment is done to identify areas of lost volume, desired lift and contour, as well as lines and wrinkles that you may want addressed. The area is cleansed and the filler is very slowly injected into the targeted area. The filler is then gently molded into place.
Facial fillers are typically not very painful, however, we can numb the area with a topical anesthetic prior to the procedure. The fillers also contain lidocaine, an anesthetic, which helps make the treatment more comfortable. Most patients describe the procedure as a felling of pressure but not pain.
Initial results are visible immediately. There may be some minor swelling or bruising to the area treated. It takes the filler about 2 weeks to fully "settle in" for your final result.
Facial fillers tend to last longer than lip fillers. Depending upon the filler chosen, results can last anywhere from 6-9 months to well past one year. Duration varies from person to person.
The most common side effects are bruising, swelling and redness. Sometimes you may feel like there is a small bump at the injection site. Most often, this is a small bruise that has formed from the injection not the filler, and will usually go away in about 10 to 14 days. More serious side effects are rare and include pain and blanching at the injection site. This is very uncommon, but needs to be evaluated by your provider/injector.
We recommend avoiding aspirin and NSAIDs (Motrin, Aleeve, and Advil) for 48 hours prior to your appointment if okay with your medical provider. We also recommend avoiding drinking red wine and taking fish oil supplements and vitamin E for 48 hours prior to your appointment.
All of these agents can cause an increased tendency to bruise. Always consult with your healthcare provider before stopping any medications.
Facial fillers have a wonderful tendency to stay where they are placed. However, as a precaution, we advise not to massage the area for 48 hours after your procedure. We also recommend holding off on any heavy exercise for the next 48 hours, as this could cause an increase in swelling. Otherwise you are free to live your life and enjoy your facial rejuvenation!
If you are a minor, pregnant or nursing, you are not a candidate for facial fillers. Similarly, if you have an allergy to any of the ingredients of the filler product, you are not a candidate for this procedure. However, as HA is a naturally occurring substance in the body, allergic reactions are rare.
